L’Envoy de Paris Saved la Soirée
This random random random event. If you ask me how I ended up here, I can’t tell you. It’s a French event that I thought was a bit more broad. Like I thought it was a citywide event called the night of ideas, but it’s a French niche event.
Why attend? I do want to walk out, like, NOW hahaha… but the first two talks sound interesting: one is on media and the other is on AI + culture. So… I’ll stay for an hour and a half and then go home. I don’t wanna stay for a 2 hour long four person panel. With local representatives from cultural groups/museums? Idk. Not for me. But these other two, yes. May be amazing.
Photo Collage + Commentary:
Notes from the Event:
- People are making small talk about the weather. One guy says he’s glad to get out of the sun, another compliments everyone fro coming here on such a nice day. Lol.
Also, the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen is happening to my shoe. It’s literally crumbling apart. I’ve had a busy day taking my daughter to downtown, to a children’s festival, then playing in the big fountain in the city center and the butterfly house, and I started to realize as soon as her dad picked her up, that my shoe is literally crumbling. CRUMBLING. My right shoe is like falling apart on the bottom. The entire sole has crumbled off and now it’s just fabric between the shoe and my foot and the ground. Like the last layer. It should last for my travel home. But I’m like wtf? Haha it’s my first time wearing these shoes and the left one is holding up perfectly fine. It’s the strangest thing . Almost liek it got too hot but then dried fast and then it’s getting rocks stuck into it and crumbling in the same go. No idea. LOL.
-So now I’m here and it’s like 13 people sitting down, maybe 13 standing up - including staff, and then liek 200 seats. So, yeah, feels insanely empty. But it’s at the town hall. I’m just surprised more people don’t go to the town hall - EXCEPT that then I looked at their calendar
OMG this photographer is so awkward too. She’s taking pictures of almost everyone here and like one guy was reading the pamphlet and he looked up at her and she was like - wait, I’m taking pictures of interaction and people actually reading the flyers and stuff. LOL. With the flash on. And now I feel liek she’s goin to take a picture of me typing but I’m like lady, don’t flash your camera in my eyes - and I just am so not into photographers. I feel liek there are few time in my life I’ve ver liked a photographer. Not to be rude, it’s just such an inauthentic career in some ways. IDK. I just like when peopel feeli like taking picots and thats it. Or you just take them organically. Not like hundreds of forced pictures of people reading mpahmphets just to make it look like this event was fun.
I know I take lots of pics form the events I go to, so I’m kinda the pot calling the kettle black, but its more for like setting context, not trying to like, idk… I dont make money off these blogs - at least not at this point. And, idk. I don’t exactly know how to say this and I know she’s probably being paid to be here. I just feel like burning the bridge of photographers. And I thin its a silly career and for some things its smart, but for lots of things its too normalized. Photographers for a home for sale or something, okay. For a restaurant showing off their food. Okay. But events with 10% of the chairs filled and making peopel feel awkarward for reading a flayer - it’s hurting the delicate environment.
Bro the other thing that amazes me is how wine glasses only get half filled. I don’t drink anymore but it just makes me feel like I’m getting so ripped to order a $15 glass of wine or whatever rand then it’s only HALF WAY filled. You know? The psychological effect is like incomprehensible.
Looks like one of the sponsors for something here is OpenAI . I see them on a sign. Like tied to this fence event? That’s so random. Cause it’s open AI and then a bunch of museums and culture ministries and stuff.
Omg the sound tech guys ar ego loud too hahah you can hear them making random jokes. Just talking about idk what. I mean, so they’re not THAT loud, but loud enjogm you can hear them and then I looked ver and them.
IDK I jsut thought his would be more social. I think that’s part of why I wanted to go to this. Cause I’m so badly lately craving, like, educational conversations and networking… what the heck? Like where do you find that? Like amazing panels and stuff?
There’s a girl four rows ahead of me (I’m in the back row, there are 7 rows, 6 chairs each - so 42 in total in my section but only 5 of them are filled including me. But anyway this lady in front of me, her back is soaking wet - minus where her bra is. Almost like she took a bike here.
Dude this photographer is so annoying. Just like she told the volunteers she wants to take a photo of them, after already taking a photo of them, and saying “I always love all the volunteers” just to lighten the mood or something?
Omg. Now she basically whispered in one guy’s ear and said let me take a picture of you holding the flyer and then he held it, and then said to the three of them sitting there, how about you three as a team. So tehy agreed and then she said, “I just want to show a bunch of epos here”. But there’s literally no one sitting gin the rows behind them or next to them… so will she blur the background. Now she’s just taking a picture of the PDF on the screen that has been there the whole time. OMG she’s like a mosquito. Now she’s going backstage I think. Good. Take a break.
You know, so much is her energy, it’s so awkward and ike she knows she’s being annoying, you know? Personality is so cut of photography. I think thats it too. It’s such aan invasive job.
Also one of the volunteers here is so beautiful. Stunning and such calm demeanor. OMG but he’s wearing like gym pants hahahah. I realize that as she walks away. The most casual outfit possible.
Yeah this event is just not social. Not that anyone will socialize with me anyway, I’m just sitting gin the back row typing. But still, it’s like not a networking event.
Oh did I mention the sweaty-back girl? I think so,.
LOL and these people are behind me and it sounds like they’re speaking fake French only cause I don’t speak French but the way they sound, it literally sounds like stereotypical French.
I have never been to France but there was like a month of my childhood that I would have this weird thing where everything I said, I’d hear it repeated back to me in a male French accent. It was so stressful and everyone in my family just laughed at me and never took me seriously, but it was really upsetting.
Okay this event is supposed to start in 1 minutes. There are like 30 people sitting down now.
Two ladies walked in and said, “oh good, it’s a smaller venue” lol. I wonder what they’re used to and/or does this group have more events in bigger venuses/. And/or maybe its more peopel sitting down, upon first impression, it looks more crowded to newcomers.
Actually lots of peopel are walking in now. One lady named Dominique introduced herself so loudly.
A younger man who looks like he just got done fishing sits in the row ahead of me.
Actually, when I lived in Shanghai, lots of peopel thought I was French.
A woman walked in who kinda loks like me but with more makeup, more liek sleek fashion, and styled hair… and I’m like - oh, I bet she’s French - and probably people like her are why peopel in Shanghai thought I was French. She just did a whole lap around the room and then sat kinda near me . Her shoes are really cute. Today before this I went shoe shopping/browsing for like a norm but had no luck. They were all too ugly or too expensive. Cause my shoe is literally falling apart right now. But, liek I said, it’ll last long enough to get me home, I bet… but not much more than that.
Wow wone woman’s wedding ring is HUGE. But it’s surprising just like a huge gold ring but like very round and shiny and wide. It looks like the toe ring built into one of my favorite pairs of saldals. She waved arount a random man here with his wife. His wife didn’t wave. Maybe they work together. Lol.
One lady with a lot of plastic surgery and botox just did a lap around the room. I have the feeling her husand is off getting her and him a glass of wine. No. He just returned to sit next to her and his but crack hung out of his pants. She did a huge awkward smile and held her hand out to hold something for him. The guy sitting behind buttcrack uy was the one earlier the photographer firs made him hold the flyer. DUDE I bet that woman woudl never believe she’d be married to a buttcrack man. She just doesn’t look like it. You know? She actually is super beautiful. And clearly cares about her image. So, partnering for life with a guy who allows his nutcrack to hang out - like it was a whole 5 or more inches too that we all saw, espeicall her and the guy sitting behind him…
Now the photographer takes a quick pic of them. And then another couple. The ohter couple is like honored to have hteir picture taken and the photographer jokes, “right? Its liek a wedding”
Oh now the woman who has the huge wedding ring asked the photographr if her name was (I won’t say) and now she itnroduced herself. As if the photographer shoudl know who it is.
Now the botox woman just ran over to the pthographer and asked for something? Like her phone number or something? I wonder if she’s asking for a copy of the photo or if she can delete it or if she can work as a photographer for their event?
Now a woman with half of her hair shaved came and sat down next to the sweaty girl.
LOL if this botox lady is asking this photographer for her info - WHY.
They shake hands and introduce themselves to the photographer. Strange. Their personalities must mesh well togehter. I’d never hire this lady as the photographer for anything I’m doing. Her mood is so uneasy.
SOemoen I know showed up. Nice guy I met who works in gaming and recently started his own business. He came and sat next to me. He said working with the schools and educational centers is a huge hurdle itself. They use a different language - student safety is a huge hurdle. 15k for a week of development budget with Canadian group
I’l be talking about this topic in my new podcast soon. My Kelly Tutors podcast
A woman gets on stage to talk.
Legacy of the French enlightementnt and future.
First want to acknowledge the traditional land we’re standing on.
something about this is so suspicious to me. I more mean it in the sense I question lots of narratives and things pushed on people, i feel like there’s more than meets the eye - and its like. I think A LOT OF our history is a lie. Even the Oregon Trail, I’ve said it a million times. And not that the land wasn’t stolen, but i think history goes back further and crazier than we even know in modern textbooks.
This woman’s picture of her self doesn’t look like her.
They are the first ever nonprofit in the entire world (she says) wow… really???
I don’t believe this .Maybe they’re the firs tof a subsection.
If you want to be a member it’s 50% off the membership and lots of perks.
Yeah I’m like omg, I will NOT be staying here long. This commercial is not for me.
She said this is her favorite event of the year and pretty soon, you’ll see why (btw this event is supposed to last over 4 hours).
Feel the energy tonight of being together and in community. The theme is about hte future and celebrating 250 years since the decelarion of independence. One guy claps and then a few do after
The history of Franco American diplomat and shaping it.
The French enlightmenetnt built off of reason, knowledge, and open dialogue.
What can we do with political uncertainty and climate change? How can we impact our future directly?
Start with two keynotes, break, and then a panel with special guests.
We rely on you to participate and interact with special guests. There will be activities for you to create a sense of community in this night of ideas.
Let’s acknowledge our sponsors (she lists them all)
One woman claps loudly for the first one she says. The woman who looks like - more fashionable me - And then they thank a group tha tI’ve heard of which monitors all teh creative emony in the city (dude they just iike the town hall to get money, too, lol)
I really it’s so much better to attend events alone. I think if/when I finally have a Ince romantic partner, it’ll be someone I like to attend events with TRULY rather than on my own. Right? Or no? Will I always like to attend events alone? It’s just funny cause I used to always want to go to things with others… but that was in college and before, and even in Shanghai. But now I realize it’s 100% better to go to things alone. No one else to tend to.
Okay here is the first speaker. Dude- they’re running 20 minutes lateeee. This guy better talk for 10 minutes so that the next guys start on time hahah. Okay now I’m just being rude.
Here is this guy on stage. I saw him back when I was by the bathroom.
He has a strong French accent hahaha. It’s almost hard to understand what he says.
Actually yeah it’s super hard to understand him cause he’s reading a speech off of sometihng so it’s both unnatural and the accent.
They said they dont’ like this current administration (I’m neutral/supporitve. I like trump alright)
80% of American choose Europe as their destination to travel
Students choose the UK/Europe and Japan
This ugy is so hard to understand hahah. But his picture is really good. His picture on the PDF of him.
The idk what he’s sayinggggggg. Literally. He’s saying stuff and making jokes and some people laugh. French peopel
Lol - he said, “these are not narratives, thssee are facts”
Omg this guys voice is hilarious.
The enlightenment is… even our understnaidng of it has changed against the 18th century…. It is at best a flexible and open framework. This is also the mission of (a guy) and (idk) to expand access and foster critical thinking
- lol this feels like its everyones mission statement
Grow criticism of the technological oligarchy.
The standards of Seattle stand out as remarkable (idk) between USA and France.
I wish all of you a wonderful night.
LOL he did finish speaking. WOWWWW he just spoke for 4 minutes and it felt like 15 hahahah. They’re running early.
Think about what “the enlightenment means to you, one word you associate with it (for me, illuminati) hahahahah I dont’ want to say that to this guy next to me. But I feel like I think of illuminate and stuff like that having to do with weird things.
I don’t even know anything about “the enlightenment” but it just sounds like illumination and that makes me think of illuminati. And devil worshipers. Sacrificing humans for endless youth.
The photographer took a pic SUPER in my face and then tried to take another of me a minute or more later and I told her no and she got upset. But it’s so bright. LOL so then she took pics of me from afar.
The guy I’m sitting next to said its a time that lots of ideas were shared and he said a lot of times thing happen globally and we dont’ realize the connection till later, for example, he said the pyramids are mad all over the world in difference locations but no connection.
I don’t believe that. I think that alien species or a smarter intelligence did create pyramids all over the earth and it’s all part of a power grid - Iv learned al to about this, but I’m also still new to it so can’t quite put it into words. But, I think they are connected
Now she asks if the words we thought of still describe the world today.
I’d say yeah- lately hte illuminati are totally being exposed though. And more is revealed than ever before.
Okay so this guys says an illuminating pace to talk about enlightenment
SEE: ILLUMINATING - ILLUMINATI. There’s something here!!!!! I’m not crazy. What’s CRAZY isthe fact he said illuminating riht after I said that connectoin. See? Case closed.
Okay so now he says why July 4th, not the 3rd or 5th…
Okay btw he made some jokes about hte nice weather
UUGH he’s reading a speech off of a something too - and it’s so hard to keep up with him, he talks so fast.
Okay so the declaration was datad on July 4th.
Ugh and his accent is purely English but hes literally reading a speech off of paper. This just makes peopel speaking in such a weird tone
OH and the butt crack guy’s butt is hanging out again. And the guy sitting behind him has to look at it. I wonder if the wife knows his butt is hanging out. And wouldn’t’ he feel that?
Say they’re talking about John Adams writing a letter to Abigail that July 2 shoudl be a holiday the great anniversary.
He got the date wrong but the way we celebrated was right.
July 4th was the day that revisions were all agreed on and then the text was authenticated and printed.
He talks so fast. Literally page after page he’s turning while reading on the podium from the white pages of paper. So unprofessional.
And that photographer should be more understanding that people don’t want their picture taken. Right? LOL.
Also it’s strange that men’s shirts aren’t made to be longer. Or anyone, just with buttcracks so easy to hang out - or maybe he needs a bigger shirt.
Okay - centralities in the blah blah. At the core is the concept of progress, achieved through the dissemination of knowledge. W’ell be talking about other forms of info circulation, enlightenment thinkers think this knowledge mostly happened because of hte printed word.
One guy wrote something waiting for decapitation in prison.
Idk what’s trailing on about.
This is a note to everyone though, don’t read a speech off of paper.
When we think about the introduction of print in Europe, we’re likely to envision a press.
But there was a technique for locking in type… ugh I was about to take pic but he went through it so far. It was cool though they placed together letters next to each other and built out words. Letter by letter placed together. Wow.
This guy keeps saying “uh” and repeating himself.
Can you tell which book is printed and which is manuscript?
The differences are there but pretty subtle. We can do the same exercise with the UW’s special collections and I encourage you too visit. We regularly take students to explore these types of materials.
Manuscript and printed text from 1350 and 1475 - just 20 years later than the Gutenberg bible.
No manuscript coudl exist in mltupile identical copies.
Standardizati0on of larger copies and volumes.
When we think back on the impact of print, The overwhelming majority of what was presented and read, widely copied in the manuscript tradition. Religious texts. Demand needed to be satisfied.
These forms where the traditional content had to be repackaged.
You know, I realize now that if her flash wasn’t so bright, I’d pronely ble more okay with this photographer. But hte flash is so extremely bright. I feel liek that is rare. I don’t remember having many photographers bothering me this much, and I think that the fast is the big thing. Dude she’s walking all around this event so much. Like she can’t feed her ADHD its so distracting hahah
Okay what formerly only a few individuals had been able to read, coudl now be read by a whole nation and coudl reach almost the se same moment everonye how understood the same language. Men found hesmevelsv possessed of the means of communicating with peopel all over the world. A sort of.. (he cut it off, but that was a quote by someone)
Now his slides have repeating pictures that we saw earlier.
The declaration of the rights of man depicted as a stone tablet. It’s so easy to forget “print’s” role in all of this. July 4th (idk what)
OMG I just remember that KEN GRIFFIN who gets paid 25M/month for cheating the stock market… HE BOUGHT THE DECLERATION OF INDEPENDENCE ORIGIANL COPY, didnt he!!??!?! OMG no way. NO WAY. Did he? I’l need to look it up. Its unreal. If he did. I thin he did.
No wonder these guys don’t like the current administration, I’m pretty sure trump doesn’t like him either. So if these guys are peaceful aobu the declaration, they feel like it’s in a buddy’s hands/possesion. I wonder if these guys salute KG. Gah hahahah. Ew. No way. NO WAY an a private citizen own this. But I’mrpretty sure he bought it 2 years ago. I don’t have internet connection now as I write this, but I’m about to turn it on and look it up. One sec. I’ll turn on my hot spot.
He did. How many first editions were made??
LOL this guy is celebrating table of contexts and indexes, etc. hahah.
Okay.. so at least there are 13 copies. He doesn’t have the ONLY one. But still. Tax write off/barf.
This guy is still talking and said the view of hte internet has turned more pessimistic but he’ll stop here. Thank you for your attention. DUDE his speech was only 13 minutes. I’m sure he had 20 minutes… right? Or even 30???? He coudl have talked half as fast and still had 4 minutes till his time slot was over.
DUDE this photographer keeps taking pictures over my shoulder. Sneaking pics of me - eyerollllll - Hopefully she caught on camera my researching of “did ken griffin buy the consitutdion”
Omg this guy answering a question
“Uh, yes, uh, you know, uh this has, uh… (thats how he started it off)… you know, we’re a few decades into the, into the, there’s oemtihng else, you know, uh, something you talk about, uh, concentration of, uh, control over how we interact with tech in hands of uh tech companies. Concentration isn’t new. There’s and and and sorta, uh,” omg hahahah.
This guy says he’s a historian - dude he’s jsut hard to write down what he says:
very elevating ethical qualities that we think of very much in opposition that digital is odoing. Rethinking print, reinventing, we do have to remember
He talks so fast, it reminds me of one time I heard someone say, “beautiful peopel speak slow. … cause they’re not used to getting interrupted” hahaha. I feel liek this guy is handsome but maybe peopel don’t listen to him a lot cause of how fast he talks.
Maybe that’ not a true theory, but idk he’s so hard to keep up with that I feel liek idk.
Okay here are some more questions.
One lady says she can’t read all of the questions. THey’re not all legible
They ask what day he’d pick for Independence Day.
The butt crack is out again. IT’d been gone for a while. GEEZE.
Okay, seriosuly, let’s step back and talk amiute, me and you (audience)
I really want to be attending amazing, inspiring events… how do I find them? I need to spend some time researching this so that I don’t keep going to these events and being so disappointed with them. You know? Liek I feel like the past 10 events I”ve been to have all been a let down (minus flexport, but even flexport, I didn’t understand 80% of it)
I need to really start searching for better events. No joke.
Is it this city? No way. I must not like, say “oh this city has no quality events”. You know? It must.
SO I need to search. All the universities in the area. Everything. I need to do some MEGA city-we THOuROUGLY research nd see where people are having amazing talks.
That’s waht I want to do tonight. Cause I’m sick of going to boring events lately. Let-down events.
Ugh the photographer is ridiculous.
The audience keeps asking questions but I can’t stay focused. Let’s see if the next speaker brings the beef. If not, I’m just gonna walk out 5 min in.
Okay hte next guy I stayed to hear speak, he flew here from Paris just for this speech??? Wow.
This guy wants to relate the Enlightenment with AI’s development today.
LOl and he’s easier to follow than anyone else who has spoken so far. His pacing and speech - even though he has a french accent (duh-ish)
He said his goal is to attend to try to demonstrate how we can use AI in a different wy. He has two hats - a professor at a (school) and he’s also running an AI company.
Not just running an AI company or (names famous ones)
He’s running a company only workign with museums.
He will show a demonstration later (ohhh his is the one tied to open ai I saw ealirer) and he wants to do things ethically.
To start he wants to talk about this period of time.
Sapere Aude: have courage to use your own understanding without the guidance of another - Kant, 1783”
What is the enlightenment? Published in a German newspaper. HE said that enlightenment can be described with two latin words: sapper Aude: dare to know.
The problem of enlightenment is not access to knowledge, it was access to knowledge, painting was everywhere: it was a problem of passivity to get the knowledge. PEopel ahve a capacity to think. They lack the courage to do some without someone else doing it for them.
Will AI restore that passivity? Or will it become a condition for intellectual courage?
AI introduced a new for of intellectual dependency. mOre seductive than you can ever image. It can answer currently, indstnatly, and it’s a powerful temptation to stop things at all and stop thinking by yourself.
I dont’ know if you already did that, but if some of you wants to produce content in another language, it’s great to translate from English to French and it coudl be a great example of intellectual dependence. And yet, the same technology can create the opposite possibility for me. A system that follows your reasoning, challenges your assumption, dont’est form a substitute, but a condition.
I will find, if you can use AI to translate form English to France, you can also use AI to try to learn how to speak French. He’s learning Italian right now. Still has italian Classe with professors, but ever night speaking 10 minutes with AI. It corrects him. More pogress with AI than years with Dueling (see, tehy said this all the time)
He said he just asks the AI to tech him Italian.
The question is: will AI restore the guidance of another or will it be a tool for intellectual courage?
HIS PPT looks so good.
The englightnment rested on three pillars:
Dialogue (salons, letters, teh friction of questions dn response
knowledge: the organized knowledge is to exercise power (wow!!!)
What a fuckin quote hahahah, what a fucking statement. Hahahah I’m so lazy to organize sometimes, but this is motivation, huh?
TOlerance: the discipline of ngaign with waht resists your thinking
These three pillars are very intersting to see int eh way we’re living with Artificial intelligence.
Knowledge traveled through conversation
Salons, coffee houses, 20,000 letters from voltaire alone. The enlightenment wa sa distributed conversation sustained across borders, over decades, through the friction of questions and responses
BTW his ppt has like stars moving in the background ever so slightly. Lol. Lately people are making animated PPTs.
More than 3,000 coffee houses in teh early 18th century in England. A shop keep er coudl sit together and debate.
Spheres of conversation. These armor online these days. A forum. Public debate is.
He’s a strong believer in Wikipedia. Write lots of articles on there.
Evey teacher I ever had told me to ignore wikipedia… so I kinda do? You now?
It’s a way to broadcast and experience knowledge.
A virtual public sphere.
This photographer is listening to him a lot hahahahah. She’s walking around so much less during this guy. I bet she finds him interesting too. LOLLLLLLLL. This is really revealing. SEE!!! She was bored in the last speaker thats why she walked around so much. Rude.
With AI today, we can experience collision. Not incidental and its very profound hat the way were are epdeinceing generative AI today is chatbots, you are asking a question to have an answer. You are creating this form of conversation
I’m going to add him on linkedin (holy crap he has 21k followers!!)
A mimic of the prtinging press, with pages, indexes, pages… its like a book
Generative AI is reshaping the form of the distribution of knowledge through this idea oc conversation.
“It is a singular thing, conversation. A man throws out a word detached form what is preceded and followed in his mind. Another man does the same. AN then let anyway catch what they can. - Diderot, Jacques La Fatalists, 1773”
Symbolic AI: rules, deduction, closed systems, knowledge as a local proposition
Generative Ai: probabilistic, contextual, emergent (he changed)
Okay!! “Organizing knowledge is a POLITICAL ACT” AJKLF:DJSL:FJKLSE:JFKL:SEKFJKS LA POLITICAL ACT!?!??!?!?!!?!?!?!?
Who gets to organize knowledge? And for who? That question has not changes.
Organizing knowledge is a real innovation. It introduces cffross-references. Analytical - sir sends you to weaving to commerce to (dk)
The way things like (omg this is true) - its like leading peopel into things)
The encyclopedia was a very political act. IT created a very important question: who gets to organize knowledge? And for whom? This questions ha is very important id its a very political question.
Some large tech companies can access a way to organize knowledge. But we can create amore open-source way. AI will allow us to do so.
“Each time the means
Omg he says he will run out of time to talk about sometihng - so he skips a side - BROOOO GIVE THIS GUY 3 HOURS TO TALK!!! HAHHAHA he’s epic)
Okay: social media is the method. Social media is not a passive acceptance. You have a discipline to realize your certainty may be misplaces. The strongest dis the one that can serve the strongest and rigorous challenge.
The practice of tolerance is becoming more and more difficult. It’s built on genegamenet and optimized for emotional reaction. It will systematically amplify (idk)
It’s difficult to have a MAGA Superman talk to a left person. A lot of this programming is based on social media. They are filtered. Those kind of things.
What is interesting and I’m showing you on the screen, we speak at the screen - and AI will nudge and (idk what he’s talking about)
When you talk to AI about political, it will say some think this, some think that. And this is the middle position
You twitter feed is thong the same xperience at all.
These systems have plenty of flows and we will get to them immediately.
Why humanity, instead of entering a truly human state, is sinking into a new kind of barbarism - Adarno, 1944
WOAH
This Iis not because hte enlightenment failed, its cause the enlightenment succeeded
The way the reason was developed, (idk)
For AI, we have som bigger issues that can be drawn by the development of AI. I’ll shote three of them. (Omg his slide looks so good)
Linguistic hedgemony: modelse trained on English reproduce a specific world view as if it were universal
Standardization: when every chatbot sounds the same and refuses the same questions
Environmental costs: dominance of nature and domantion of human beings are two faces of the same process
I am jaw-dropped by so much of what he’s saying.
Enlightenment was not a period, it was a project. IT was a project toward set future.
“The project of modernity is not exhausted, it is incomplete. The task is to pursue it with full awareness of hte ways tit has ben betrayed” - hobermus
He says he’s going to end here
nooooo hahahah omg. i’m loving this speech hahaha finally!!
What does it look like when you want to build dn AI that will be more eniglithened? You will have a demo
LOL his image has a naked lady on it with a baby cupid or something. Okay, ddi you need to pick a packed woman as your image? DUE? Thats my one and only mark against this guy. He’s 20/10… 19/10. You know?
Build AI that converses, not broadcasts. Knowledge bases controlled by instutituojns, not improvised form the open web. Eighty languages, because addressing everyone the same way is not universiifism, its is indifference. (Btw his ending words on the screen/ppt sounds like Chat GPT wrote it)
Wow! He gave a good speech. A really good speech!!! That was amazing. Hahahahah
Okay some questions from the audience - but this woman asks open and it’s like can the enlightenment salon be replicated with AI or no?
He says this is an important question, the fact that AI will always say you’re amazing and your question is fantastic - first of all is very unhelpful. ChatGPT does not speak like a French waiter, you know? But there is a way to have the perimeter to be less (idk). Who you are developing some of the content we are creating, try to introduce some fiction. I’ll give you one great example that is still happening in your LLM.
If you ask it to tel you about your idea… tell me why it’s a very bad idea - the way you frame the question can introduce friction. It’s a great way to think against yourself. ITs a great responsibility on training and AI to receive. It s arepsonsibiltiy of the ones to have a less (idk) approach.
Its very interesting, when you are entering the process of creation of those models, there is a phase Called the reinforcement phase, peopel are train to make the AI better after lots of data and documentation. We are asking humans if the answer of hte AI is “good” or “bad” and the way we’re asking that, its not a question of “is it true or false” this is influeicnign the way its workign today. If we are asking a different question, we can produce different AI.
Lol well I mean what if you ask AI about the pyramids hahaha. I bet it’ll have lots of ideas.
Okay. I wanna quit writing hahahah. I feel like this was amazing and I”m done. I’ll whip back out my laptop if I really feel inclined but I jsut wanna listen and leave soon.
He said “teaching” is the most important task in life. To make peopel think by themselves, have great teachers and schoolsthat are cathedral. Teaching is a ways for peopel to think by selves and teach peopel to think in another culture or language. Ts a great way to be more free.
Let’s go Kelly Tutors!!!!
Man. That guy gave a great speech. Idk why/how. Idk what it was but it was a mindblowing speechahhahha. Thanks for flying here from Paris.
Wait - another question: how do we incentivize students to learn instead of just use AI
- first assignment he gives students is t o say that you’ll require of rate final exam to write your paper with ChatGPT.Every kid is freaking out, yes, fantastic, we dont have tow rod int his class! Fantastic
Omg hahahhaha
He said he has a very popular class. And then he expanse the process. He asks them not to give them a final essay produced by chat gpt. But all the props tehy use to get the answer.
WOW
Not the result, but the process. He tires to produce that with AI.
Its very difficult for students to think by themselves with this system
The prompts could be, “do my essay for me”
The ones who are trying to define the different worlds and do research and question the results created by AI and rewrite it and callnage the argumentation - this are the good students for him. He’s pretty sure there is a way to think by yourself suing this technology.
Literally my mouth dropped when he said so much o this
We are not escaping ai and we are keeping it here to stay. At some point professors were against Wikipedia but now it’s everywhere and in daily life. It’s here to stay, so how can we use it in a more intelligent way.
WOW what a wild answer!!!
She said are you hiring? Yes. Of course. We are not only in France but we are going to open positions int eh USA so please reach out. Thank you. It’d be fun to talk with you.
OMG danggggg this guy gave a great presentation hahahaha. I lhink everyone loved it. And ilvoe his answer about AI
Okay I dont think i’l stay for hte second panel
- Bro he was a KING hahahah he was amazing. Of course he has 21k followers. lol.So, his business is you can use AI to talk to the statues and ask them questions. And the answers come from art curators who studied, not open ai or whatever. or also with it ?idk.
