One Parent Said Her Daughter 'Expresses Herself More Freely' Now -- Here's Why Songwriting Does That

Elena I. wrote this review about my songwriting class: "My daughter absolutely loves the songwriting classes. She's been able to express herself more freely, share her ideas with confidence, and truly enjoy the creative process."

Three things in one sentence: self-expression, confidence, and joy. That's not an accident. That's what songwriting does when it's taught right.

Why songwriting unlocks expression in kids:

Most of the day, kids are told what to think about. What to read. What to write about. What the "right answer" is. Songwriting flips that completely. There's no right answer. There's only their truth, shaped into something they can share.

When a kid writes a song about feeling left out, or being annoyed at their sibling, or loving their dog -- they're practicing vulnerability. And when they hear that song produced into something that sounds real and polished? That vulnerability gets validated. They learn: my feelings are worth expressing. People want to hear what I have to say.

This connects to my own story.

I busked on the streets of downtown Seattle. Just me, my voice, and strangers walking by. Some people stopped. Some kept walking. One man stood there and cried when I sang "Travelling Soldier."

That experience taught me something I try to pass on to every student: your voice matters. Not because it's perfect, but because it's yours. When you put something real out there, it connects with people in ways you can't predict.

That's what Elena's daughter is learning. Not just how to write a catchy chorus -- but that her ideas have value. That sharing them feels good. That creativity isn't scary.

What the class looks like:

Small group, max 4 kids. We write together, give feedback, use AI tools to produce, and celebrate what everyone creates. It's collaborative and low-pressure. Kids build on each other's energy.

Over 4 weeks, the transformation is real. Kids go from "I don't know what to write about" to "I have three ideas and I can't pick one."
