Yes. Really. A kid walks into my songwriting class with a feeling, a phrase, or even just a vibe -- and walks out with a finished, produced song.
Here's how that's possible.
The process:
Step 1: Start with what's real. Every song begins with something the kid actually wants to say. A feeling, a story, a rant, a dream. We don't start with music theory. We start with expression.
Step 2: Shape it into lyrics. I help kids structure their thoughts into verses, choruses, and bridges. They learn songwriting fundamentals -- rhythm, rhyme, repetition -- but in a way that serves their idea, not the other way around.
Step 3: Produce it with AI tools. This is where things get exciting. We use AI to generate backing tracks, experiment with melodies, and produce songs that sound genuinely good. Kids don't need to play an instrument or read sheet music. The AI handles the production; they bring the creativity.
Why am I the person teaching this?
A few reasons. I'm in the top 1% of ChatGPT users according to OpenAI's yearly review. My students use AI literally daily in our work together. I'm not teaching AI as a novelty -- it's integrated into everything I do.
But I'm also a performer. I lived in Shanghai for 4 years, where I was an actress. I've busked on the streets of downtown Seattle, making $600 in two weeks singing for strangers. One man cried after I sang "Travelling Soldier." Music isn't theoretical for me. It's something I've lived.
