The Babysitter Checklist Every Parent Wishes Their Sitter Had

You finally found a babysitter. They seem great. Your kid likes them. You feel mostly good about it. But then you leave the house and the questions start rolling in. Do they know where the first aid kit is? Do they know what to do if someone chokes? Do they have your neighbor's number as backup? Do they know your kid's bedtime routine, or are they just going to wing it?

Every parent has felt this. And here's the thing -- most of it isn't the sitter's fault. Nobody taught them. Babysitting is one of those responsibilities we hand to teenagers and just assume they'll figure out. But would you start any other job without training? Without a checklist? Without knowing what to do in an emergency?

That's exactly why I built the Babysitter Starter Kit.

Inside is a safety guide that covers the real stuff -- what to do in emergencies, how to handle common situations, when to call the parent versus when to handle it yourself. It's written for kids ages 9 to 14, which means it's clear, practical, and doesn't talk down to them.

There's also a foldable pocket reference. This is the thing I wish every babysitter carried. It's a quick-glance card with emergency contacts, important info, and reminders they can literally keep in their pocket while they're on the job. Parents -- imagine handing this to your sitter already filled out. That's peace of mind you can fold up and hand over at the door.

The kit includes an income tracking calendar too, because if a kid is old enough to babysit, they're old enough to start understanding money management. Tracking what they earn, when they work, and what they're saving for -- that's real financial literacy in action.

And yes, there's an original song. Because I put original songs in all my resources. Music helps concepts stick, and for a young babysitter learning new responsibilities, a catchy reminder of the basics goes a long way.

Rosita H. said it best: "We got a lot of good ideas out of this resource."

If you've got a kid who's ready to start babysitting -- or you're a parent who wants to feel better about the sitter you're hiring -- this kit is for them. And if your young sitter wants live training, I also run a weekly Babysitting Bootcamp group class where they can practice skills and ask questions in real time.
