Why I Built a Babysitting Business Class (Not Just a Babysitting Safety Class)
There are plenty of babysitting certification courses out there. Red Cross. Local community centers. Online modules. They teach kids how to handle emergencies, change diapers, and manage bedtime routines.
Those are fine. They serve a purpose.
But I didn't build another one of those. I built a business class.
Here's why.
It drives me absolutely crazy how easy we make it to learn about dinosaurs, shapes, colors, Pokemon -- but not actually essential life skills. Financial literacy. Negotiation. Marketing. Pricing. Understanding your own value and communicating it clearly.
Kids babysit for years and never once think about it as a business. They charge whatever the neighbor suggests. They never raise their rates. They don't track their income. They don't know how to get new clients beyond word of mouth.
That's a missed opportunity. Because babysitting is the PERFECT vehicle for teaching business fundamentals. It's real. It's relevant. Kids already want to do it. All we have to do is frame it differently.
What makes this class different from a safety course:
- Kids create marketing materials and learn client acquisition
- They build rate sheets and understand profit
- They practice negotiation role-plays
- They learn professional communication
- They plan their babysitting business like an actual enterprise
Rosita H. said after taking the class: "We got a lot of good ideas out of this resource."
That's exactly what it's designed to be -- a resource that gives kids (and parents) practical, actionable ideas they can use immediately.
My background matters here. I've taught 10,000+ students over 12 years. I scored 200/200 on the Praxis Math exam. I've been featured on Good Morning America and rung the NYSE bell alongside my student entrepreneur. My entire teaching philosophy is about glamorizing education the way we glamorize entertainment.
Why don't we glamorize financial literacy? Why don't we make learning to run a business feel as exciting as learning about Pokemon? That's the question I'm always trying to answer. And this class is one of my answers.
