5 Ways to Help Your Shy Kid Speak Up With Confidence

Every parent knows the feeling. Your kid is brilliant at home -- cracking jokes, telling stories, explaining the entire plot of their favorite show in excruciating detail. But put them in front of anyone else and they freeze.

I get it. And after 12 years of teaching 10,000+ students, I can tell you: shyness isn't a personality flaw. It's a comfort zone problem. Here are five things that actually work.

1. Shrink the audience.

My Public Speaking & Interviews class maxes out at 4 kids. That's intentional. When a child only has to speak in front of three peers (not thirty), the stakes feel manageable. One parent told me her daughter "was shy when she talked with new people" and "did not want to attend lots of other outschool classes." But she attended mine. Small groups change everything.

2. Use improv, not scripts.

Memorizing a speech puts all the pressure on getting it "right." Improv games put the focus on reacting, playing, and being present. There's no wrong answer in improv -- and that takes the fear out of speaking.

3. Make it genuinely fun.

If your kid dreads the activity, confidence won't follow. My class uses games, silly scenarios, and creative challenges. The goal is to get them talking before they even realize they're "public speaking."

4. Repeat low-stakes practice weekly.

Confidence isn't built in one workshop. It's built over weeks of showing up, being heard, and realizing nothing bad happened. Four weeks of consistent practice rewires how a kid feels about using their voice.

5. Let them see other kids doing it too.

When your shy kid watches another kid stumble, laugh it off, and keep going -- that's powerful modeling. Group classes show kids that everyone fumbles sometimes and that it's totally fine.

Here's what I know for sure: shy kids don't need to be "fixed." They need a space that's small enough, fun enough, and consistent enough to let their real voice come through. That's exactly what this class is built to do.
